International Driver's License

An international driver’s license has the same effect as a Korean driver’s license. However, the former is valid in Korea for a year after the date of issuance. Foreigners residing in Korea for more than a year must convert their international driver’s license to a Korean driver’s license.

Converting a Foreign Driver's License into a Korean Driver's License

A foreign driver’s license holder must prepare the required documents, including a letter of confirmation for his/her foreign driver’s license issued by the embassy, and have them screened. Afterward, he/she must pass an aptitude test and a written test to get a Korean driver’s license.

• Required Documents : original copy of a Foreign Driver’s License, original copy of a passport, original copy of an Alien Registration Card, three color photos, a letter of confirmation for an applicant’s foreign driver’s license, Certificate of Facts for Immigration, and fee.

Obtaining a Korean Driver's License

• There are two types of Korean Driver's Licenses, Type I and II, determined by the type of vehicle driven.
• To get a driver's license, applicants must pass a written test, a function test, and a road test.
• Documents required at each test
  • Written Test : application form, passport, Alien Registration Card or Certificate of Domestic Residence Report, 3 color photos (3 cm × 4 cm), and fee
  • Function Test : application form, passport, Alien Registration Card or Certificate of Domestic Residence Report, and fee
  • Road Test : application form (Learner’s Permit), passport, Alien Registration Card or Certificate of Domestic Residence Report, and fee
• Aptitude test and renewing adriver's license
  • Type I driver's license holders must take an aptitude test within the time period specified on their Driver's License while Type II driver's license holders must renew their license within the period specified on their driver's license.
• Driver’s license test can be acquired in the driving test place administered by the government or at a permitted driving academy.

In the Event of a Traffic Accident

• Transport injured person(s) to the hospital.
• Reporting the accident to the police is not required, but may assist with their investigation.
• Inform your insurance company of the accident.
